How can I prevent Diabetes? My mother and sister have it and are dependent upon Insulin, but no one else in the family has had any health problems. Is it diet or what?~Jennifer/Palo Alto, CA
Dear Jennifer~In my opinion, Diabetes is becoming an epidemic, partly because of diet but also because most of us have become quite sedentary. I recommend eliminating processed grains and pastas from your diet whenever possible because they convert to sugar during digestion, particularly when combined with protein, and it goes without saying that it is best to eliminate sugar/sugar substitutes, processed flours and processed foods.
Stick to whole foods, such as fresh or steamed vegetables, fresh fruit (using bananas, strawberries, oranges and tangerines sparingly), nuts that grow on trees, seeds, proteins (excluding soy), etc. Whole grains, such as brown rice, can be eaten occasionally. Drink plenty of fresh, purified water (our favorite is Revitalized Water). I also highly recommend using VitaGanza's own Glucose Support, 600mg Alpha Lipoic Acid from Doctor's Best and Fish Oils. If you, your mother or sistern have trouble with circulation in the lower extremities, I recommend adding in Benfotiamine.~Vicki
