Digestive Enzymes: These enzyme formulations are generally only plant-based and taken with food to aid in the proper digestion of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. They are generally much less expensive than proteolytic systemic enzymes and they are taken in significantly less quantity (generally, 1-2 with each meal or snack, depending upon the type of food consumed). Papain (from papaya), Bromelain (from pineapple), Lactase (for lactose intolerance to digest dairy), Lipase (to dissolve fats), Amylase (to breakdown sugars, grains, starches) and Protease (to breakdown protein are the most common enzymes used. Theramedix DGX is an excellent example of the highest-potency digestive enzyme formulation we recommend for those with difficulty digesting food, including post-gastric bypass surgery and those with chronic or acute gatrointestinal distress, such as gas, cramping, bloating, indigestion and acid reflux. We also recommend Superzymes for anyone without their gallbladder (but who have no history of stomach ulcers).

Proteolytic Systemic Oral Enzymes: These enzyme formulations are commonly both plant and animal-based formulas, such as Wobenzym, Ultra Proteo-zimes, Immzymes and Vital Proteozymes (works best for Progressive Diseases, trauma/injuries and systemic congestion); however, there are some plant-based proteolytic systemic enzyme formulations available, such as high-potency Theramedix RPR (works best for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia CFIDS).

Proteolytic systemic enzymes are enterically-coated to be taken on an empty stomach (taken a minimum of 45 minutes before or 2 hours after food consumption) so they are delivered past gastric acid into the intestinal tract, where they can work throughout the body's organs, tissues, arteries/veins and joints to fully cleanse from head to toe. The most common (and in our opinion, most effective) Proteolytic systemic enzymes formulations contain a combination of Pancreatin, Trypsin and Chymotrypsin (enzymes derived from bovine or porcine pancreas), papain (papaya) and Bromelain (pineapple), which breakdown rogue proteins in the body, such as yeast, fungus, parasites, viruses and bacteria, which are commonly considered to be the root cause of disease. Unlike digestive enzymes, high-quality proteolytic systemic oral enzymes are considerably more expensive than digestive enzymes, must be taken in high dosages, anywhere from 6 to 60 tablets or capsules per day and; therefore, are generally sold in larger quantities per bottle. Wobenzym and Vital Proteozymes are sold in 800 count bottles because, at therapeutic doses, one 800 count bottle lasts one month.

Wobenzym and Vital Proteozymes are excellent for:
Athletes of any kind
Cancer patients choosing alternatives to chemo or radiation therapy
Cancer patients healing and detoxifying after chemo or radiation therapy
Tumors and cysts of any type

Plaque in veins/arteries
Surgical patients for post-operative healing (and detoxifying from general anesthesia)
All inflammatory conditions

Immzymes and Ultra Proteo-zimes, which come in 200 count bottles, are excellent for:

Beginners who wish to see how they react to proteolytic systemic enzymes before increasing to higher doses
Pets, such as dogs and cats

Those on sustained maintenance doses of 10 or less tablets per day (one bottle will last about 20 days)

CAUTION: Enzymes of any type should NEVER be taken in conjunction with prescription medications that thin or "lubricate" blood or drugs that can cause any type of bleeding disorder.
