There is a great deal of confusion surrounding pH balance. Because urine represents digestion (using enzymes and hydrochloric acid to breakdown foods for absorption into the body) and detoxification of your gastrointestinal/urinary tract, it is supposed to be more acidic than your saliva.

Saliva alone should be between 6.5 – 7.5. Urine alone should be between 6.0 – 6.5 because the acidity is what helps your gastrointestinal/urinary tract kill bacteria during digestion and expulsion from the body. Urine is usually more acidic in the morning than later in the day or evening because, presumably, you have been sleeping all night, allowing your body to rest and then to expel toxins through urine upon rising. By the same token, if your urine and saliva are too high in sustained acid, it creates an environment that allows yeast, fungus, parasites, harmful bacteria and viruses to thrive. The key is balance. If you add both together and divide by 2, your total pH should be between 6.4 – 7.0.
