I heard you talk about soy possibly being harmful. Why? I feed my baby soy formula and am concerned about what it could be doing to her. Could this be the cause of her gas and diarrhea? She is 3 months old. Marjorie A. in Encino, CA

Dear Marjorie...In our opinion, based both upon research and from personal experience, soy formula and most soy products are indigestible and unhealthy, particularly since so many Americans consume far too much of it, thinking erroneously that people from Asian countries eat almost exclusively soy and that this helps prevent cancer. The information provided to Americans is incomplete. While it may be true that people from Asian countries have less of certain types of Cancer, they also have a higher incidences of other types of Cancer than do Americans! Further, most people in Asian countries consume probiotic-fermented soy products and primarily as a condiment, much like we use mustard, catsup, salt and pepper. Soy products in America are processed with chemicals for rapid production, packaging and placement on supermarket shelves.

Further, soy is considered a plant-based estrogen enhancer, which can cause hormonal imbalance in male and female children throughout their lives. Females may have marked PMS symptoms and males may have lowered testosterone levels as they reach puberty and beyond.

The attachment discusses soy further and a good book to read about all foods, including soy, is "Nourishing Traditions," by Sally Fallon and Mary Enig, Ph.D.
