Dear Vicki,

What kind of product do you recommend for heartburn and acid reflux? I was using the Digestion Package and it worked great for my I.B.S. and for my heartburn most of the time but if I eat late (like I do often) or something too sweet or spicy, I can't sleep because of the acid. I am now using BioK Plus but need help with the persistent heartburn and reflux that are my problem now. Should I still take the L-glutamine to help heal my stomach? I just don't want to take Nexium but will if I cannot get this hearburn under control.

Thanks,

Dusty in Newport Beach

Dear Dusty, Now that your I.B.S. is under control and the heartburn is mostly under control, you appear to need additional support because of your lifestyle and diet.

If you can, try not to eat for 3 hours before bedtime. However, if this is not possible, for heartburn and/or acid reflux, I heartily recommend NaturalCare RefluxAway and Doctor's Best PepZin GI together; take one RefluxAway with every meal plus 2 at bedtime and take 1 PepZin GI at bedtime (with the 2 RefluxAway). Fabulous combination! Be sure to drink one glass of water before eating each meal (to cause enzymes and HCL to flow into the stomach) and refrain from drinking anything during the meal (as liquids will dilute the enzymes and HCL needed to breakdown fats, proteins and carbohydrates efficiently).

While L-glutamine aids in healing and sealing the intestinal wall, it is not what I would recommend to heal the stomach lining. The herbs in ReluxAway and PepZin GI heal the stomach lining and also help to prevent h.pylori overgrowth, which leads to ulcers.

I found that RefluxAway and PepZin GI are an effective alternative to Nexium, which merely depletes acid formation in the stomach. In our opinion, this leads to a whole host of other problems, not the least of which is improper digestion of fats and proteins due to lack of HCL. This, then, causes solids to be passed into the intestinal tract, causing gas from putrifaction of solid waste that has not been properly digested, and may cause abdominal pain and ultimately constipation or diarrhea. In addition, the body is unable to derive nutrients from undigested tissue, which can lead to malnutrition, fatigue and illness because of an undernourished immune system.

This explains the "known" side-effects, which are included in literature provided by the pharmacist who dispenses the medication: Acid or sour stomach, belching, heartburn, indigestion, stomach discomfort, upset or pain, abdominal pain, burning, itching, redness, skin rash, constipation, diarrhea, dryness of mouth, gas, headache, nausea, pain or tenderness around the eyes and cheekbones, sneezing, stuffy or runny nose, tightness of chest or wheezing.

If you need more help, please be sure to call or write. Vicki
