My husband has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease and I don't like the medicines they said he needs to take because I researched them online and they do not cure it. What can you tell me about Alzheimer's and what natural methods can we use instead? ~ Carolyn/Redondo Beach, CA

Dear Carolyn ~ Alzheimer’s Disease is a form of dementia that was first discovered in 1906 by a German doctor, Dr. Alois Alzheimer, when he treated a woman displaying cognitive difficulties and behavioral problems. Upon her death, when he autopsied her brain, he noted goo-like protein clumps and rope-like bundles lodged between and surrounding nerve cells.

Alzheimer's destroys brain nerve cells, results in deficiency of essential brain chemicals and diminishes blood flow to and in the brain. Symptoms include memory loss, difficulty performing tasks, language deficiency, disorientation to time and place, poor or decreased judgement, problems with abstract thinking, misplacing things, severe changes in mood or behavior, changes in personality and loss of initiative. Symptoms may appear as early as age 40 but are observed most frequently around 65; although, the youngest documented case was a 28 year old male. About half of the men and women over age 85 in America have Alzheimer's Disease or some form of Dementia. Four million Americans suffer from Alzheimer's Disease and more women than men are affected; nearly 100,000 die from this disease annually, making it the 4th largest killer of adults in America.

Probable Contributors to Alzheimer's Disease include:

  • Aluminum and mercury toxicity from municipal drinking water, antiperspirants, antacids, pots/pans, etc. (our bodies are able to excrete about 20 mg aluminum per day; however, one antacid may contain as much as 200 mg of aluminum!). 100% of all Alzheimer's patients have elevated aluminum levels in the brain.
  • Xylene and Toluene, chemicals commonly used to process water and foods
  • Parasites, particularly flukes, salmonella and shigella, which contribute to tremors, vertigo and speech problems
  • Caffeinated and carbonated beverages
  • Chemical sugar substitutes, such as Aspartame and possibly Sucralose
  • Certain prescription drugs cause TGA (Transient global Amnesia), resulting in memory dysfunction, disorientation, confusion and forgetfulness, which may occur without warning and are common side-effects of statin drugs (such as Lipitor, Zocor, Mevacor, etc.)

Foods and substances to avoid:

  • Aluminum pans and foil (if foil must be used in cooking, double-line it with parchment paper to keep the aluminum foil from coming into contact with food)
  • Antacids
  • Most commercially prepared Baking Powders
  • Antiperspirants and deodorants containing aluminum and aluminum derivatives
  • Most commercial soaps and lotions
  • Aspartame (converts to formaldehyde in warm temperatures, such as a 98.6 body)
  • White flour, sugar, potatoes and processed, chemicals-added foods

Common traditional prescription treatments are in a class called cholinesterase inhibitors, such as Aricept, Exelon, Reminyl and Cognex. These medications are intended to inhibit the enzymes that deplete acetyl-choline which is used as a neuro-transmitter in the brain. However, it should be noted that acetyl-choline is deficient in the Alzheimer’s brain – not present in enough abundance in the first place. This may be explain why the degree of improvement was modest at best and more than ½ of the patients showed no improvement at all taking prescription drugs for Alzheimer's. There was no indication that combining medications improve symptoms but there is evidence that this may increase side-effects. Common side effects: Included nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, increased frequency of bowel movements, eventual liver dysfunction.

NSAID’s (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs): Have been shown to do absolutely nothing in relieving the inflammation in the brain that contributes to Alzheimer’s; however, the side-effects (ulcers, stomach hemorrhage, liver failure) cause irrepairable damage to the rest of the body. Acetaminaphen destroys antioxidants that help destroy free-radical damage, thereby further damaging brain cells.

Recommended Supplements (NOTE! Most should not be taken with prescription blood thinners, such as Coumadin):

  • Wobenzym; 30-45 tablets per day in 3-4 divided doses on an empty stomach (taken a minimum of 45 minutes before or 2 hours after food). Wobenzym is an anti-inflammatory that dissolves fibrin, necrotic and fibrotic matter from the blood, tissues, organs and joints.
  • NSC100 dSM Beta Glucan: 1-2 capsules upon rising and 1-2 capsules at bedtime on an empty stomach (taken a minimum of 45 minutes before or 2 hours after food) to enhance the immune system (capsules may be opened into water and consumed).
  • Ginkgo Biloba is excellent for increasing circulation
  • Nature's Plus Adult-Active: DMAE, a nutrient that manufactures acetylcholine, aids with memory and focus
  • American Biologics Ultra Brain Power and Ultra NeuroRecovery (provides nutrients for brain function and helps the brain convert and absorb acetylcholine
  • Doctor's Best 600 mg Alpha Lipoic Acid (recycles Vitamins C and E increasing antioxidant acitivity)
  • Jarrow Curcumin95 (potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory that may slow Alzheimer's and reduce the accumulation of amyloid protein plaque formation)
  • B-Total Sublingual Vitamin B Complex (energy and tissue regeneration)
  • Jarrow Methylcobalamine (B12) 5000 mcg twice per day (energy and proper neurological function)
  • Jarrow TLC Buffered Vitamin C 4500 mg per day in divided doses mixed in water (antioxidants, proper heart and circulatory function)
  • Enzymatic Therapy Eskimo-3 Fish Oils (softgels or liquid) provides Omega-3 fatty acids for proper neurological function and circulation
  • PhytoTherapy CardioProtector Plus (antioxidants and tocotrienols for proper circulation and heart function)
  • Source Naturals NAC (N-Acetyl-Cysteine) 1000mg per day (protects brain tissue)
  • CoQ10 200mg 4-8 softgels per day (oxygenates the blood and cells)
  • Source Naturals Yaeyama Chlorella (detoxifies and provides vitamins, minerals and amino acids
