John and Vicki ~ I know you don’t think much of Splenda or Equal but what in the world are we supposed to use for our coffee, tea and other stuff? Even on the Food channel, there is a chef that bakes constantly with Splenda in large amounts! He and his whole family lost lots of weight using Splenda and I need to lose weight. I am 35 years old, 5’5” and weigh 215 lbs but I also have a sweet tooth. I have been gaining weight as I get older, even though I am trying not to eat much food. I cheat sometimes by eating a Big Mac and fries but not very often. I eat a lot of salad and fruit. Still, I can’t lose weight and the sugar substitutes are the only thing that helps me with my sugar fix. It helps me a lot to drink Diet Pepsi and eat fat-free desserts to stay away from sugar. I tried Atkins but couldn’t stick with it. What am I supposed to do? ~ Erin/Anaheim

Dear Erin ~ To be fair, people's demand for sin-free sweets and "diet" products to save them from gaining so much weight is the primary incentive for all of these miracle weight-loss products. Has no one noticed that America is getting fatter, not thinner, using these so-called diet products? I believe it is because they are all chemicals that collect in tissues and organs, prohibiting proper detoxification of toxins from the body. I also do not believe age has anything to do with weight gain; it is all about proper diet and exercise, even if the "exercise" is no more than parking further from a store and walking.

Concerning the chef on the Food Network, while he does use Splenda in dessert products, he also emphasizes the importance of consuming mostly protein (such as meat, fish, eggs, dairy, nuts and seeds) and deriving carbohydrates from vegetables and low-glycemic fruits (such as cruciferous vegetables, lettuces, spinach, asparagus, blueberries and raspberries). I suppose that, since desserts and snacks are such centerpieces of the American diet these days, cooking shows would be boring if they did not share sweet, chewy and delicious desserts with people but sugar is very high in glycemic rise and high in carbohydrates. That is probably why he recommends Splenda.

However, we believe there are all kinds of side-effects using Splenda that are not yet known, just as countless noted side-effects exist with Aspartame and Saccharine, such as depression, anxiety, irritability, neurological disorders, birth defects, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Fibromyalgia, headaches, ulcers, heart disease, varicose veins, Diabetes, diarrhea or constipation, malignant tumors and the list goes on...these sugar substitutes are chemicals. The body naturally recognizes these unnatural substances as foreign bodies, causing the immune system to react...or over-react. This leads to progressive disease.

We recommend eating fresh, whole, nutritive foods, such as meat, fish (wild), chicken, eggs, dairy (raw if available), raw tree nuts, raw seeds, raw or lightly steamed vegetables and fruits and drink plenty of fresh, purified water (our personal favorite is Revitalized Water, which is live and more efficiently hydrates tissues and organs than most). Keep those nuts, seeds and raw vegetables prepared and lying around for the times that you normally reach for pretzels, chips, etc. Whole grains may be eaten sparingly but realize that they are carbohydrates that take longer for the body to breakdown, which can inhibit weight-loss. Better to leave them alone until you are at or near your desired weight.

Try detoxifying your body for one month with a body cleanser; we particularly like Wobenzym, Source Naturals Yaeyama Chlorella, Garden of Life Super Seed Beyond Fiber and RenewLife CleanseSmart or CleanseMore, to name just a few. There are many weight loss products on the market that help. Our own Weight Loss Package is very popular for losing weight fast (but there are recommended dietary restrictions for a short time, so read the instructions on vitaganza.com first!). Another excellent choice we found recently is using Enzymatic Therapy Earth’s Promise green drinks every morning mixed with Super Seed Beyond Fiber and swallowing one Doctor’s Best 600mg Alpha Lipoic Acid (this combination is helpful for losing that middle “spare tire” or “beer gut” without changing your current eating habits).

Naturally, there may be other factors involved in anyone’s inability to lose weight, so you should consult with your doctor before beginning any program; however, I do not believe diet sodas and diet, fat-free (high sugar or sugar-substitute) products prove beneficial in this process. We encourage you to try some healthy alternatives and leave the chemicals to rats. ~ Vicki

How do I purchase the products recommended for loosing the spare tire around the middle? I am 63 and also have osteo arthritis in my thumbs. Any suggestions. Currently I am on Gold Shield products made with Royal Bee Jelly. Helpful? not really! but I don't know what it would be like if I did not take them.
