What are the symtoms of being lactose intolerant? Kate/Bellvue, WA
"Lactose intolerance" means the sufferer is unable to breakdown lactose sugar. The enzyme, lactase, aids in breaking down lactose and can be found in many enzyme formulations. While it is known that lactase enzymes are missing in a lactose intolerant person, it is not fully known why this deficiency occurs.
Symptoms include gastrointestinal discomfort (cramps, bloating, nausea, gas), diarrhea or constipation, I.B.S. (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), blood sugar irregularities, consumption of certain prescription medications (including previous use of antibiotics), abdominal or gastrointestinal surgery, etc. We believe the root cause is Candida Albicans (yeast/fungus) which easily gains a foothold in the body when the immune system has been compromised by medications, surgery or other foreign involvement and Candida is fed by sugars and chemicals.
Try drinking 6-8 glasses of water per day before meals or on an empty stomach to stimulate enzyme production; do not drink fluids with your meals (as water, tea, coffee, etc. will dilute your digestive enzymes). Eliminate refined sugars and foods, high-glycemic fruits and starchy foods (such as white potatoes and white rice).
We recommend taking 1 Theramedix LCS before each meal that contains lactose and 1 Theramedix DGX before meals that contain little to no lactose. To aid in correcting the problem, we recommend using a good probiotic every morning and evening. We consider FloraMore among the best probiotics for this particular situation because each capsule contains L-glutamine, an amino acid that aids in healing and sealing the intestinal wall. Using a regimen of anti-fungal remedies is also helpful in killing fungal/yeast overgrowth in the body.
