| My Dentist requires fluoride treatments for my six year old son; What can I do? |

My husband, six year old son and I just moved to Michigan and our son's dentist is requiring that he have fluoride treatments to protect him from having cavities and other tooth problems. But I know that the fluoride they use is a derivative of aluminum processing and that, rather than being a naturally-occuring mineral from the ground, the dentist and toothpaste companies are using a metal-chemical waste product falsly named "fluoride." I did not have this problem with a doctor requiring that anyone in my family use fluoride when we lived not far from your store in California but she was into naturopathic dentistry. They apparently have requirements in Michigan that I don't like. Awhile ago, I heard you say you never allowed your children to have fluoride and that they have never had cavities or other problems with their teeth. Is there a natural alternative to this chemical and metal that you used for your children and what do you recommend? ~ Stacy/MI
To the best of my knowledge, at this time in America, you may refuse fluoride treatment for your son in all 50 states; however, you certainly have the freedom to hire a different dentist to tend to your son's dental requirements.
You probably heard me say that, when we moved to a new state, I told my children's dentist that all of our children were highly allergic to fluoride and that they were to note the front and top/inside of all 3 files, in huge red letters DO NOT GIVE FLUORIDE - SEVERE ALLERGY, which served us well until they were all grown and gone (it was not until they left home that any of them had their first cavity or any dental issues; although, one of our children did have braces). The fact is, our oldest did receive fluoride with his first dental visit and it caused him to vomit profusely. That was all I needed to witness, the reason we decided that he would never have fluoride again and that neither of our other two children would ever have fluoride treatments under our watch. They all brushed their teeth with fluoride-free toothpaste (available nearly anywhere now but certainly at health food stores) 2-3 times daily and their teeth are strong without the use of additives. In my opinion, if fluoride really were the dental miracle that has been touted for as long as I can remember, surely there would be no need for dentists or dental care by now.
