John and Vicki talk about the dangers of soy and soy products in the American diet all the time. You could always GOOGLE "dangers of soy" but we attached two articles, one from the Weston A Price Foundation and another by Sally Fallon and Mary Enig. These are just the tip of the iceburg of why soy, which is now cheap and abundant in America, is not good for human or animal consumption.
Most restaurants discontinued using peanut oil because so many people have peanut allergies but the soy industry has done a great job of convincing everyone that no one will be allergic to soybean oil "because it contains no proteins of the soybean," and that soybean oil does not change the taste of food. In fact, more people are allergic to soy and soy products than any other "food." Further, you have probably already noticed that soybean oil makes all foods taste the same, that they have a chemical flavor and that foods prepared in it leave an odd, cloying coating in the mouth!
Just as corn, safflower, peanut, cottonseed and canola oils are considered "vegetable oils," so is soybean oil considered a "vegetable oil," so if the restaurant says they use "vegetable oil" (which is their pat answer to remain in compliance with some local, State and Federal government standards), you must press them to find out if they specifically use soybean vegetable oil! If they do, complain about it. Tell them you need to know which menu items are prepared using soybean oil (grilling, frying, smoking meats, coating/lubricating vegetables, etc.), then refuse to purchase those items but be sure to tell the manager why or they have no idea why you are not consuming specific menu items!
Soybean oil used for frying, grilling and smoking foods contains: TBHQ (Tert-butylhydroquinone) as a stabilizer, shown to cause stomach tumors and damage to DNA in rats - prolonged use "may induce carcinogenity." Could this answer why there are increased incidences of stomach and colon cancers? PDMS (Polydimethylsiloxane), which makes oil more elastic so it can be used in high heat conditions - this is a chemical that was used in those old breast implants that exploded inside women's bodies, a silicon that does not break down but allows the oil to be used, and even re-used, at high heat temperatures.
Even most so-called natural cold, expeller-pressed soybean oils are mixed with RBD (Palm-olein or Palm Kernel Oil) from Malaysia, which is stabilized with BHA (Butylated Hydroxyanisol) before shipping to other countries, like America (since these chemicals are not added in this country, this information does not have to be on the label!). RBD with BHA accumulates in the body's tissues, is shown to destabilize hormone balance and can cause cancer - it has been banned in the U.K., Japan and in all children's products in Australia, yet it is in too many American food products to count ~ read your labels!
If you have noticed in the past few years that the foods you eat are causing cramping, bloating, gas and/or diarrhea, cold extremities, flushing or nausea, it could be because soy is in everything! The oil is used to fry, smoke and grill food, while ground soybeans are used as fillers and textures in food! Why? Because it is cheap! Isn't it always about money? Grrrrrr.
Soy is also considered a plant estrogen, which for many Americans who are "estrogen-dominant," could cause fibroids and cysts in women and prostate issues in men. Soy formula for bottle-fed babies may result in PMS and gastrointestinal issues for children and teens. If you consume soybeans (edamame), soy milk, soybean oil or other soy products, and have a hormone imbalance issue, try discontinuing all soy for several months to see if the problem resolves. Many have found that simply omitting all soy products makes the problem go away - certainly cannot hurt to give it a try.
While there are articles posted on the FDA website, and many FDA officials are willing to agree that soy and soybean oil can appear to contribute to various health issues, such information can be difficult to find on their website. We are hoping for greater clarification about the effects of soy and soybean oil from the FDA in this area in the coming years, but we understand such studies take time. Meanwhile, we as a nation need to pay attention to what we eat and how it effects us, then report, report, report!
We have emailed and called many restaurants, or even visited and asked store managers what type of vegetable oil(s) they use to fry, grill and/or smoke their foods. Except for the Mom's and Pop's, nearly all chain restaurants and sports venues in California use soybean oil. The following regional and nationwide restaurants indicate that they use soy: KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken (no wonder it doesn't taste right anymore!) INCLUDING Kentucky "Grilled" Chicken Wendy's McDonald's Arby's Outback Burger King Aramark (this company prepares foods in stands and restaurants inside sports arenas, like football, hockey, basketball, and baseball stadiums) Bob Evan's Ruth's Chris Ham's Applebee's Chili's
If you ask and find more than these listed above, please notify us and we will add them! We will keep adding to the list and reporting but, if your stomach is having trouble with grilled or fried chicken sandwiches, fried potatoes or other fried or grilled foods you eat at those restaurants, we encourage you to call or write to those restaurant's corporate headquarters; write to your State legislators, Governor, the FDA and USDA to tell them your experience because it is the only way you can change this potential health hazard to you and your family. You need to trust yourself and the research you do to watch out for you and your family, then insist on better choices in the marketplace in order to be healthy instead of falling for hype. What greater reason to dig for information than for your family and their health?
