Many people ask why we do not recommend psyllium, cascara sagrada or senna in a fiber colon cleansing formulation. As we have often said on the air, these are highly effective herbs to use for a short-term, one to two week cleanse; however, we have found two complications with these three particular herbs. Psyllium, cascara sagrada and/or senna, if used without sufficient water, often cause constipation because all three require large quantities of water to work properly. Too many people, who think they consume plenty of water, actually do not. And just to be clear, water does not include coffee, tea, juices, soup broth or anything other than water.
The average requirement per day of water is 1/2 ounce of water for every pound of body weight (ie - if you weigh 100 lbs, your body requires at least 50 ounces of water daily to function). Adding in exercise (that causes sweating) or herbs like psyllium, cascara sagrada and/or senna to cleanse the colon (which wick away water from the body until they are fully hydrated), more water must be consumed or these herbs will actually constipate, causing cramping, bloating, explosive diarrhea, blood in the stool, etc. The other common problem with these herbs is that, when used beyond short-term, they become "addictive," in that the person using them is unable to have a normal, healthy bowel movement without continuing to use them. THAT is not natural. The human body should never be dependent upon a specific type of fiber in order to have normal, healthy and regular bowel movements.
That is why most customers find that using FiberSMART powder or capsules for a colon cleanse, or a PSOE (proteolytic systemic oral enzyme) formulation, such as Vital Proteozymes or Wobenzym for a systemic, full-body cleanse, is much more effective and non-addictive. To break a dependency cycle on psyllium, cascara sagrada and/or senna, CleanseMORE is highly effective and may need to be used in conjunction with PSOE's, as well.
To maintain healthy bowel movements, we encourage the use of natural fibers from low-glycemic fruits and vegetables, seeds and tree-grown nuts. Now THAT'S natural!
