I have insomnia and need help because it is effecting my work and private life. I am a vegetarian, take no drugs but I do take a multi-vitamin. I fall asleep at my desk and in front of the television and I really have no energy for a social life! Help me.~Jerry/San Antonio, TX
Dear Jerry~Vegetarians often do not take in enough amino acids and commonly take in too much sugar - I believe there is an art to being a healthy vegetarian. If you are not a "strict" vegetarian or vegan, I recommend using L-Tryptophan but you should know it is derived from certified organic and healthy animal protein. A deficiency of L-Tryptophan commonly results in insomnia, depression and anxiety. You cannot use L-Tryptophan if you are taking anti-depressants; however, you said you take no drugs so this does not appear to be an issue. I am assuming that includes prescription drugs.
We have found that a combination of L-Tryptophan and sublingual melatonin (Source Naturals Orange flavor is my favorite) are highly effective in helping to resume normal, healthy sleep patterns. Take 1 L-Tryptophan capsule for every 50 lbs body weight you are and take 1-3 5mg sublingual melatonin about 30 minutes before you wish to be asleep. Keep to lower doses and gradually increase as needed; taking too much can result in drowsiness the next morning.
A common "test" we recommend to determine whether or not a person has an L-Tryptophan deficiency is to eat a meal of turkey, cottage cheese, bananas and almonds, as these foods contain relatively high amounts of L-Tryptophan, which is an essential amino acid in the body. Sugar, chemical and metal toxins and prescription drugs deplete your body's L-Tryptophan levels, which may be the cause of your inability to sleep well.~Vicki
